Joint pain, also referred to as arthritis or arthralgia, is the inflammation or pain from within the joint itself.

Joint pain impacts any part of your body’s upper and lower extremities — from your fingers, hands, elbows and shoulders to your knees, ankles and toes. Of all the joints in our bodies, knee pain is often cited as the most common followed by shoulder and hip pain.

As our bodies age and undergo greater wear and tear, painful joints become more prevalent. Common causes of pain in a single joint result from minor injuries including every day strains and sprains and bursitis. Multiple joints are affected by conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout, or the build-up of uric acid in the joints.

Pain is the body’s way of telling us something is wrong. It’s easy to write-off joint pain as the normal aches and pains of living, but even with such common conditions, there are exciting new treatments and breakthrough solutions that can bring relief to even these everyday pains. If faced with joint pain, it is important to seek medical assistance as could be an early indication of a more serious medical condition.

Symptoms can include:

  • stiffness and general aches and pains
  • sharp pains associated with joint flexion and extension
  • swelling, redness and tenderness to the touch
  • a tingling and sometimes numbing feeling

Other common treatments include:

  • application of ice and heat
  • low-impact exercise for strengthening and loss of weight
  • steroidal injections into the affected joints
  • genicular nerve blocks
  • stem cell therapy/regenerative medicine
  • platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
  • radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
